The Ostrogothic tribes of the Migration Period issued solidi and tremisses, formally by order of the Byzantine emperor. The designs imitated those of the Byzantine Empire, even though they were qualitatively very diverse copies of the archetypes. This Ostrogothic tremissis from King Athalaric (526-534) is an imitation of a coin from Emperor Justin I. The motif is skillfully done; Victoria carries, easily recognizable, a wreath in one hand and a cross in the other.
