This golden coin was struck in the city of Genoa and is thus called genovino d'oro. Along with Venice, Milan, and Florence, Genoa was the most densely populated city in Europe in the Middle Ages, and played an important role in long-distance trading. The city's coins bore the same images over centuries: a city gate on the obverse and a cross on the reverse.
