The Sicilian city of Syracuse looked back on a long and glorious coinage history when this bronze coin was minted in the first half of the 3rd century BC. The denomination is unknown. The obverse shows the head of Artemis Soteira, the city deity of Syracuse. It even spells her name, SOTEIPA.
The winged thunderbolt on the reversere represents the father of the gods Zeus, the thunderer. Greek letters give the name of the issuing city, SYPAKUSION.
