Holy Roman Empire, Republic of Modena, Grosso

From 1226 to 1294, Modena issued a series of grossi, denari, and bolognini, to which this coin supposedly belonged. The obverse bears a gothic M and the indication of origin DE MVTINA, from Modena. The inscription on the reverse is IMPERATOR, while the monogram in the centre shows the letters FDC. This by all accounts refers to Frederick II, who was emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 1220 to 1250.
