Kingdom of England, Edward I, Penny

King Edward I (1272-1307) initiated the last comprehensive recoinage in medieval England. In the course of this recoinage, Edward had groats minted for the first time. However, England was not yet ready for these heavy silver coins, and the groats were not met with success. The Edwardian sterling penny, on the other hand, developed into an internationally sought-after currency. It was also accepted on the Continent, and frequently imitated in western Germany and the Low Countries.
