Republic of France, 20 Francs 1895

This "Napoleon d'or" depicts a genius writing the constitution of the French Republic on a law tablet. Next to him a fasces is shown with a hand taking an oath on top. It represents the oath taken on the French constitution. The cock on the other side stand for vigilance, and besides takes up the old Latin pun of "gallus gallicus:" "gallicus" means " Gallic, Gaul," while "gallusĀ» means "cock."
