Republic of Greece, 20 Drachmai 1976

Pericles (c.495-429 BC) was for more than 30 years the predominant politician in the democracy of Athens. He made Athens the leading city of Greece and the cultural center of Europe. He secured the Athenian supremacy in the Delian League and renewed the city's principal religious and civic buildings. The crown of his building program was the Parthenon on the Acropolis.
