Canton of Solothurn, Time of Mediation, 4 Francs 1813

Federalism has always been a major Swiss issue in politics. The effects of federalism were even reflected in coinage, as can be seen on this coin. The obverse bears Solothurn's coat of arms, while the reverse shows a soldier with the flag symbolizing the Swiss Confederation. The number 19 in Roman figures stands for the 19 cantons that formed the Swiss Confederation between 1803 and 1815.
