Sicily, Syracuse, Obolus

The depiction of Arethusa's head on the couns of ancient Syracuse was considered as high perfection art already among contemporaries. This portrait was used as model for coin motifs until recent days: For instance in France, where Arethusa reappeared on franc-coins in 1930.

The reverse of this small coin shows the wheel of a quadriga; the four Greek letters in the quarters stand for Syracuse.
