Republic of Greece, 5 Drachmai 1973

The winged horse Pegasus is an ancient coin motif. It appears on gold, silver and bronze coins of the antique Greek world, especially on the coinages from Corinth and its colonies Korkyra (Corfu) and Syracuse. While in Corinth the Pegasus is shown in connection with the city's founding myth, it is later regarded as a symbol of combative spirit.
