Republic of Malta, 5 Cents 1976

Malta has been settled for millennia. There are five large temple complexes on the island, all about 5500 years old and thus among the oldest and to at least some extend still standing buildings in the world. The Maltese are proud of that history, and express this on their coins. From 1972 to 1982 the Maltese piece of 5 cent bore an altar of the temple Ħaġar Qim (pronounce Hadschar-’iim). The tradition continues on the euro coins, as the coins of 1, 2 and 5 cents feature a temple from Mnajdra.
