Roman Republic, Quadrans

The obverse of this quadrans shows a well-known coin image, although not known from Roman issues, but from the coins of Alexander the Great (359-323 BC). Depicted is the head of the Greek hero Herakles wearing a lion's skin. Behind the hero's head are three pellets as specification of the coin's value of 3 unciae.

The reverse features a prow, the motif customary on Roman bronzes. The goddess Victoria is standing in the ship, laying down a wreath. The inscription C. CVR. F. denotes the moneyer Gaius Curiatius Trigeminus. Next to the prow are again three pellets for the value, and below is the inscription ROMA.
