Holy Roman Empire, Bishopric of Würzburg, Rudolf II of Scherenberg, Shilling

The Bishops of Würzburg issued mainly shillings as coins of circulation. This piece bears the Frankish escutcheon on the obverse, the symbol of the Bishop's ducal title. The reverse shows Saint Kilian, the patron of the Bishopric – legend had it that this Irish missionary found a martyr's death in Würzburg in the late 7th century. The Würzburg cathedral is consecrated to him.
