Attica, Athens, Tetradrachm

At the beginning of the 2nd century BC Athens began to coin in a new manner. The basic elements, the head of Athena and her owl, were still present as on older Athenian types; but they were elaborated in a whole new stile and with a fashionable crest on the reverse. Additionally the coins now bore the name of the city and several other names and letters of which the meanings are in part unknown.
