Southern Italy, Calabria, Taras, Stater

From the end of the 5th century, the motto on the coins of Taras was a rider – on the obverse he rode a horse, on the reverse a dolphin. The illustrations changed frequently, while the subject remained the same: the relation between man and beast.

On this coin, the horse rider is in full gallop, throwing a lance. The dolphin rider holds a crested helmet.

The coin is signed, which suggests that is was created by a renowned artist. To whom the signature KAL on the obverse can be assigned is unknown, however.
