Saint George, depicted on the obverse of this coin, found his martyrdom in the early 4th century. People began to venerate him as a saint soon thereafter, especially in the In the Eastern Mediterranean. In the Eastern Orthodox Church he became one of the most revered saints, a 'Great Martyr.'. Because of his military background and his indestructible belief Georg became the patron saint of soldiers and noblemen. His reputation as a dragon slayer sprung up much later.
