Holy Roman Empire, City of Zurich, Ducat

The inscription on the reverse of this ducat shows that Zurich was a CIVITAS IMPERIALIS until the end of the Thirty Years' War: a city under the dominion of the Holy Roman Empire. Moreover, the coin represents Emperor Charlemagne, his sword raised and holding a globe. Charles was highly venerated in Zürich because legend had it that he had founded the city once upon a time.
