This denier was issued by Hugh the Great, ruler over numerous duchies in France. The obverse shows the monogram of King Raoul (923-936), Hugh's brother-in-law, and the inscription GRATIA D – I, by the grace of God. The reverse gives the name of the mint CASTIS LANDINI (Château-Landon). The letter "R" of CASTRIS is missing, however, and the "N's" are inverted.
