Persian Empire, Satrapy of Caria, Hecatomnus, Tritartemorion

This tiny silver coin of only three millimeters in diameter is of magnificent beauty. It is a tritartemorion (also tritemorion), a coin worth three quarters of an obol, and shows a lion, the ancient symbol of strength and power. On this small coin the lion is depicted even twice: on the obverse as a protome with its foreleg visible and its mouth wide open, and on the reverse as a scalp with a spear in its mouth.
