Roman Empire, General Cities Issue, Bronze Coin

In 330 AD, the Roman Emperor Constantine moved the capital of his empire from Rome to Byzantium, which was from now on called Constantinople. To celebrate the occasion a series of coins was minted.

For Constantinople coins with the inscription CONSTANTINOPOLIS and a female personification of the city were issued. For the former capital of Rome corresponding coins with the Goddess Roma and the inscription URBS ROMA were made. The reverse depicted the Roman Wolf nursing the twins Remus and Romulus.
